Since XP is no longer being produced, you are going to be paying a premium as demand increases, and supplies drop.

Go ebaying for faulty PC's with windows stickers - MS doesn't like it and will tell you that you can't do it, but thanks to a little bit of european law, in europe if you can prove the old PC has been scrapped (hence me saying buy whole PC's) you can re-use them... (I think lol)

This is a definite gray area we're treading on here. I'm going to leave this thread open for now, but if the talk starts to go south (read: Piracy) it'll get locked.

I wonder if the license key would be transferrable if some component of the old system was moved into the new..?

Usually they're tied to the MBB. Unfortunately, that means that if you replace just the MBB, your license isn't technically valid anympore... -_^

Personally I prefer to just not mess with licenses.

I lol'd at this as I stare at several hundred copies of XP Pro in my parts cage. Most of those are for one customer since they HAVE to use XP on 3 of their boxes. We are trying to get them on Embedded XP so we don't have to worry about it anymore.

Did you know that certain companies can still buy any quantity of XP through the channel? We happen to be one of them because our customer is a medical device manufacturer.
