LCD's from laptops do not make good monitors, because they require a controller board to operate. In a laptop, the controller is built into the motherboard/mainboard. I would say your best bet is to auction the lcd on ebay, and use the money to buy a second monitor.
Alternatively, depending on the model of LCD (which can be found on the back of the panel itself) you may be able to buy an LCD controller board. www.earthlcd.com is a good site for LCD kits and information.

This question has been asked many times on here (I asked once too), and every response has been similar to what Lukifer has said. It can be done, but it will be more work and cost more than buying a cheap LCD off eBay or at an online sale of some sort. And earthlcd is a good place to look.
How big do you need this monitor? You could do the classic PS1 LCD mod if it doesn't need to be bigger than 5", but you can also go to eBay, I'm sure you can find a 15" monitor for ~$20-50.
Good luck with whatever you choose though, and if you're set on using the laptop screen, do a search on the forums and read some of the threads you find, you can get some pretty good info. on them.
