    Have you thought about RAID?

Currently, the fastest 1TB HDD is 7200RPM and the fasted HDD you can buy maxes out at 300GB for about a dollar per GB. So on one hand you have your 1TB drive, but not fast enough. Then on the other hand, you could have your 1TB but at almost a thousand dollars and probably not much of a worthwhile speed improvement. So I say RAID is your only option here. SDD's don't have nearly the amount of space you require. The largest one I know of is 512GB at something like $1500. Although, you could get a super fast SDD and use it just for your OS install, then use regular drives for storage reasons. But RAID is the better option here I think.

People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

I got a 1TB WD Black edition, and love it; I've heard that it's about as fast as the first-gen WD raptors, as well, due to the density.

Did you send it back to the retailer, or to Western Digital? WD is supposed to be the most reliable, but youre always going to have some that are faulty.

I put a hard drive cooler on mine, because it would get pretty hot.

Took them 5 months to get it back with me calling them weekly saying weres my hardrive? after the frist week they recived it (post said they did) I noticed they didnt have it in the system.. so I called them and asked whats going on (they lost it in there warehouse) Took them a week to find it I had to contact them agian because It was now delayed because no stock.. talked to them agian ... said it should be a few days like 4-5 they pass and then I contact them agian and was like ok whats up still says its delayed.. They like we dont have any of those hardrives because they are going out fast ( they sold all the stock ) I like well how long is it going to be? 5 more days.. they pass agian... and I call agian whats going on its been another 5 days heres the refrence numbers agian when is my hardrive comeing back? Then instead of a black 500gig they send me a blue.. and at that point I was like I just wont buy from them agian they lost my busness (I buy alot of hardrives) because I build compters for friends.. and friends of friends I get an average of 40 systems a year... I charge 40 to build it and install it for them ... I pick the parts they give me the money I finish it that day or a day later..

I say you stripe two 500gig 7200rpm drives and call it a day. as previously mentioned, you can always buy a 32 or 64gig SSD for a decent price and install your OS, apps and some games on it. Buy a nice 1tb drive or raid 2x500's for Media, backups, etc...

I'd say RAID-0 up two SSDs for OS/apps/etc, and use a 1TB WD Black for storage.

You could make your own software RAID with 48 flash drives. Faster than you'll ever want to go.

can only do raid in os since my mb even though its new doesnt do raids.. so to install the os on it is a pain in the ass as for the ssd to dang small.. fast sure but If I want fast i would use my 300gig rapter drives which I use in other pc just so I use them... I want pure size and speed 1tb or more min need the space.. and only have 4 sata slots 1 is dvd rom rest is 3 hardrives 2 500gigs full and 1tb also full.. If I raided the 2 500 I would have to install os on the 1tb dont want to do that want speed since hardrive is slowest part in my rig..
