Thread: old treasures

    Default old treasures

I was wondering what kind of neat cases and other treasures you guys have found at thrift stores. I'm going to hit them up tomorrow to see if theres any mod worthy cases. I'm still figuring out if I want to buy a pre-modded case or to do it myself, the way I want it.

Definitely DIY. A little bit of premod is ok IMO, but it's quite satisfying, fun and even educational doing it on your own.

If I buy a pre-mod, then it looks like everyone else's pre-modded case. I want my case to be unique!

And if you take it to a lan party, I bet it makes it easier to win!

For those of you who can't sense the subtlety in this sentence, I will elaborate- If someone would have flamethrowers on his case, then fellow nerds may be afraid of getting literally burned by his flamethrowers if they don't let him win/are more hard on him.

Don't just look for the obvious cases, there are always a few interesting and moddable pieces to be found. I found my first breadbox in a thrift shop and built this. Click the pic for more.

You may see older PC cases, but chances are they'll be AT or a proprietary form factor. Maybe not a bad thing, but they'll need more work to use with modern parts. I see a lot of old Compaqs and Packard Bells, and there are actually a few that have some character to the designs. Bad thing is the places around here try to get top dollar for PCs I would throw in the trash. $80 for a Pentium II?

I went to one of them, and they had nothing. So I went to Home Depot and bought some acrylic for a future psu window mod. Do you have a work log for that awesome pc?
