Building a case with 'found' parts

My fiance has a metal file cabinet that has seen some better days to say the least. After some discussion, she has given me the green light to tear it apart and use what I can to build a case if I so desire.

Needless to say, the desire is there, but I've got enough irons in the modding fire at the moment.

Also, that orange pseudo-plexi window that I put into the side of Frankenstripe doesn't fit the feel of the theme anymore, so like any good modder, I shall place it in a bin full of odds and ends. Very bothersome when you have plans for something but you can't describe it.

Has anyone attempted anything similar? I know that in the guitar world, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons had a guitar and bass made out of wood that was salvaged from Muddy Water's childhood home. Other than that, I can't really think of any other examples from any modding-related field.

Enough of my rambling. At this rate, I'll have an army of modded computers in 5 years.

Very bothersome when you have plans for something but you can't describe it.

You should draw it or use the sketch up.

Honestly, I don't have the patience for that program.

I'll figure out some way to mod it into something sometime.

Alright, played around a bit in sketchup, and came up with a very rough draft:

Looks innocent enough. But if we look at the back of it...

we see that things are not what they appear to be.

I'm going to gut the rails out of the cabinet and cut out the hole for the mobo tray assembly within the next month, and also rivet the two door panels together so I can attach them to the rest of the file cabinet via hinges. Gonna have to get a new lock, since we don't have the slightest idea where the key is at.

Also planning on putting a bottom floor on the bottom of the cabinet. And big ol casters.

I'm figuring that with this much phsyical storage space, I shouldn't have to worry about cramped quaters for installing hard drives.

This one's gonna be a long assed work in progress once I get started...

Hey, What happened to the John Deere Mod? . .I would Like to see some work done on it. Looked Like you had a great idea going.

Finish that one up man. . I'd love to see that thing in the completed section.

This may not have anything particularly to do with what you're doing with the cabinet, but the found parts thing reminded me of a sculptor named Robert Klippel:

Basically, he made these fantastic sculptures out of objects he found lying around.

And I think it would be really cool to have a case like that.

Work will continue on the John Deere starting around June 15th-ish.
Work will also continue on Frankenstripe that same day.

Just gotta make it through the next couple of weeks is all...
