    Default Boxes

I made some treasure boxes for my girls this last Christmas. I love working with walnut, and it looks so great with the right inlay. My kids were both thrilled with them and have them stuffed with treasures already.

I hope that someday they can hand them down to their kids.

I'll tell you, given the time and material (mainly the time) I wouldn't make another one for less than $200. Of course, every time you make something again it gets easier. Maybe that's why I so rarely make the same thing twice.

I've thought about it, but the construction methods I used on these wouldn't work on that scale. Not to say I wouldn't enjoy doing it. In fact, I would enjoy the challenge, but it would take a lot of hours to get it right. I may do it in the future, bigger boxes for bigger kids. (Or maybe for their kids.)

Nice work. Do you have any shots of the interiors?

    EDIT:
And what size are they? There's nothing in the pictures for me to get a scale of reference on.

I'll get some interior shots up in a few days. My wife took off on vacation with the kids and the camera.

As for size, they're about a foot long. Believe it or not, I didn't measure the sides when I built them. I took a slab of walnut, looked at it and said "Yeah. *This* big." and started cutting.

I thought a long time about the latch. You've got a treasure box, you want to be able to lock it. After many many methods came to mind, I just decided to make it with no metal showing anywhere. The lids pop off, they're not hinged. The twelve 2-inch brass screws that hold it together and give it strength are hidden under the inlay.

    Those are real nice.

I love working with wood. It just gives you a huge sense of accomplishment when you build something cool looking. I've done a little bit of dog furniture (don't laugh) and some hope chests. Oh and a cradle for a friend. Oh ya and 3 houses. lol

Those will be cherished by the girls I'm sure. They love stuff like that. Great job.

Interior shots and size comparison. Yes, the sides are ridiculously thick for the purpose, but they are built to last.

The lids fit with a raised area on the underside, cut to fit exactly within the interior dimensions of the box. The one with the purpleheart inlay is actually a little too snug, it actually snaps into place. I need to set up my router table and shave .001 off two sides and it will be perfect. The one with the mahogany-and-holly inlay I got right the first time.
