    Default Questions about Celerons

The PC I'm currently using is an old HP thats been equipped with the most uber latest and upcoming technology, a 2.2Ghz CELERON!

    I know, I know. I'm one lucky son of a gun. /Joking /depressed /damaged ego

Anyways, I don't know anything about Celerons, so...

Are all Celeron processors, Celeron D's? or is their a whole line of Celeron processors, "D" being a specific generation? Looking on the processor and in the "hardware info" section in my OS, it doesn't say anything about this processor being a "D". (It's socket 478 btw)

My second question is, would upgrading from this awesometasticular 2.2Ghz Celeron processor to a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 processor make a difference at all? What about heat? Would the Pentium 4 generate much more heat than the celeron?

Thanks for the help, its now 4:20 in the morning and I am going to bed. lol

    (now accepting pity donations) lol
People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.

No not all Celerons are "D" only this ones with QDR 533Mhz, socket 478 and LGA775. There are two types of Celeron`s D:
    1: based on Prescott Pentium 4 core feature 256kb L2 cache (from Celeron D 310 (2133Mhz) to Celeron D 355 (3333Mhz)) 90 nm manufacturing process.
2: based on Cedar Mill Pentium 4 core feature 512kb L2 cache (from Celeron D 347 (3066Mhz) to Celeron D 365 (3600Mhz)) they are 65nm manufacturing process. It has less
    TDP then Prescott`s.

    Your second question:
you would get some performance kick thanks to larger L2 cache but dont expect any miracle it`s still netburst.

    Here's a review from Tom's Hardware P4 vs Celeron.

And depending on what P4 you go for. I bought one less then a yr ago off Ebay that was a P4 SKT478 3.0Ghz with a 1MB Cache and 800Mhz FSB w/HT. I didn't upgrade from a Celeron but did upgrade from a P4 2.0Ghz with a 256KB and 400Mhz w/o HT and did notice a significant difference. I would say if you are just trying to extend the life of your pc and have the extra cash to go for it.

well i got a celeron just to get my pc going until i upgrade and so fars its been pretty good. its a celeron D 420 LGA775 and from what i've been told Pentium 4's are better but of the celerons i have a good one. here is a cpuz shot of mine in case you want to see. i like the fact that there is not a lot of heat with it, especially with the overclock i have on it. i was told by the "can it run" thread website, this one, that i can't handle crysis, but i can play it just fine on all medium.

At your clocks your Celeron would give a Pentium D a run for its money Spawn. The Conroe Celerons are a completely different ballgame than the older celerons. The new celerons are pretty sick for the price.

And upgrading to the Pentium 4 in your case Zephik would be an improvement. You won't notice an increase like you would with a dual core, but it would still be a good improvement. Don't go spending like 100$ to get it though, its not that big of an improvement.

yea I wouldn't spend a dime on a new processor unless it was for a C2D. I just happened to have an old Pentium 4 laying around that I found a few days ago and this celeron was driving my crazier than a monkey in front of a stack of bananas.

Btw, I installed the Pentium 4 a little while ago. I almost forgot about the thermal paste, but luckily I found some laying around in a box of old computer parts. I think it was from my Blue Orb, since I used Arctic Silver instead of the supplied packet.

Anyways, its sooo much better than the celeron. Its still not as good as what I'm used to, but it really did give a good punch in performance. I figured out a decent way to test the performance; Myspace.com. Basically, just go to browse, then open up as many media rich profiles as you can without it slowing down noticeably. Before, with the celeron, I got to about three profiles. Now, with this Pentium 4, I can get to about ten.

....now if only I wasn't using a cd drive as a hard drive. I'm sure it would be much faster lol. The story about that is my external hard drive is an sata. This computer is too old, it doesn't have SATA or the option to boot from USB devices. So I threw in a ubuntu live cd and plugged in a 40ft ethernet cable. Now I can do everything except saving stuff. I think I have about 70MB total as my "Hard Drive".

I'm going to love telling people that, if only for the expression on their faces.

"You mean Gigabytes right? Not megabytes?"

"No, no. I only have around seventy megabytes, at best."

Simply put, old computers aren't equipped with SATA ports and they don't believe in USB External Device Boot. That, and I can't afford even a Slurpee at the moment because I'm not getting paid anymore. So life is pretty dandy at the moment. lol But hey, at least I can browse the web right? and now at faster speeds thanks to my new[ish] processor!
