Hey I found this while surfing today, it's a how to scratch build tutorial and it mostly uses cheap things like asprin bottles and such, seriously check it out.

When I was little I used to do something similar to make trees for warhammer! I used loads of intertwined copper wire around a thin peice of copper pipe and covered it all with a hot glue gun to stick it all together and give it texture, then painted it - made awesome winter trees!
