Which is better, AMD Athlon XP2100+, or a 1.7Ghz P4?
I'm not after a fan boy opinion, but an opinion on which is actually better.
I'm not sure of the model of the P4, it's in a Dell system I just bought of eBay and will have later this week.
The reason I would like to know is I'm building up a budget system for a friends niece and would like to give her the best from what I have available.
The Athlon XP2100+ is also supposed to be a 1.7ghz processor.

Guessing by their age, Probably the Athlon. AMD cpu's of that age had a higher effeciency than the P4's, meaning that their 1.7GHz was comparable to a 2.0GHz intel chip or so.

Right go with the athlon. I mean I have'nt updated my rig yet to a athlon 64 or anything. I am still running a athlon xp 2600+ that is oced to 3000+. she still runs stable and I am playing nfs:carbon and oblivion on mine at high settings and get o lip from the system.

I have to agree, the XP will be better for light processing/web browsing. Be careful of heat though. When those suckers have a fan go bad or don't transfer heat properly, it takes a few seconds before the die cracks.
That would be the only thing that the p4 has going for it. It has better operating temps and could last longer in high temp enviroments.

Buy a "cheap" Thermaltake heatsink and fan, and go with the AMD. My AmD 2000+ shutted down last month because it was too hot, but only because the HS ws clogged with dust, eh. when I have the time and the thermal paste I am switching the original HS for a Thermaltake Volcano that I found in a guy's tower he gave me.
