The other way to look at it is you can practice some of your ideas before modding an expensive case.
If you destroy a couple of $10 cases while you practice putting in fans or windows it's no big deal.
Don't feel you have to go all out to begin with either. Just by spending the time tidying up and old case and doing a few simple mods like paint and fans and some cable management you'll have a much better idea of what's involved when it comes time to try something harder or mod a more expensive case.

Speaking of inexpensive cases...are there any good websites out there that sell old used / damaged computer cases?? There used to be a store in Columbus, Ohio called Computer Success...I took it for granted...everywhere you looked they had old cases monitors for CHEEEEEEAP! But alas...they have closed. So where do we find these cheap cases!?

Any computer stores near you? I know my local one (not some chain store that sels computers, but a small dedicated PC store) has a whole lot of old cases. They normally end up in the bin if no-one wants them.
eBay is another place. Look for stuff close by so shipping isn't expensive.
