Making your very own Bullets! (Prop style J)

After having read NovusProgMorbus turret case mod thread and progbuddy idea of making bullets, I decided to go down to the ol’ workshop and make 1. Here’s the process that I ended up using.

    1. The Shell Casing: This was actually the easiest part that came to me. Taking a copper pipe half inch (1/2) diameter and measuring it to 3 inches in length and cutting it. Will give you the basic starting point for your bullet. To make the bottom piece where the charge is held I didn’t really go to fancy on this because I was trying to see if it would work, more important then being pretty for now.

You have two choices @ this point: 1 very long and 1 super short (guess which one I did before I figured this out)

    a) Take a good 2 inches from the same pipe and cut it vertical so that you are able to see a “ U “ shape, take a pair of pliers and carefully start to bend it so that you are able to get it to a decent flatness, once you’ve got there take 2 pieces of wood (what you have on hand 2*4 etc just big enough to put the copper piece in between. Clamp the wood together or hold it with your hands just keep the wood from moving to a minimum, now take out your trusty hammer and start pounding that thing till it’s as flat as a supermodel. Take your compass and measure out a diameter just abit bigger then the pipe and draw it on the piece of copper you just pounded, and cut. This chunk should make 2-3 of these parts.
    b) Take a penny, grind it sand it smooth.

Now to connect the two pieces you don’t have to be picky, its not structural just esthetic. You can solder weld it, super glue/ cement glue, whatever you want that will bond the two materials.

To add more detail for example the bevel usually seen on the bottom of bullets you can file it, mill it out etc before you attach the two pieces. Reference pic: http://www.special-warfare.net/data_..._bullet_01.jpg

    2. The Bullet: The best material to use here really is a wooden dowel (getting the same size as the copper pipe is best) just as progbuddy mentioned. The shape is up to you; speared, hollow point etc. I just did a spear shape. Take 1 ½ off of your dowel, mark it at 1” from the top (important) this will give you the guide for sanding the shape out and leave you enough material to taper the end to place in your casing.

Good write up. It sounds pretty cool, but pics would be great, maybe you could borrow a camera or something?

By the way, using a penny like that is defacement of US currency. It's illegal and you can do jail time for it. I know its only a penny, but still.

Fun Fact: Pennies cost 1.75 cents for the US mint to produce. And we pay for them in tax dollars. What the hell?!

A: According to the NY Times in April of 2006 a U.S. penny cost 1.4 cents to make.

B: Since May of 2006, all circulation Canadian pennies from 1942 to 1996 have an intrinsic value of over $0.02 USD based on the increasing spot price of copper in the commodity markets.

C: Using 2001 figures provided by the RCM [Royal Canadian Mint], they have estimated that each Canadian penny cost 4 cents to produce and distribute.

    Oh Canada.

    Lousy America:
"Everyone wants to throw in his two cents about the penny.

I argued Wednesday that the one-cent coin has outlived its usefulness. It's a burden not only to millions of trouser pockets, but also to the U.S. taxpayer, since each penny now costs roughly 1.75 cents to mint."

That's where I must have read that - that's the paper that I get.

Back on topic. Got any pictures? They sound pretty cool.

If you don't like pennies, chuck em. They make awesome weapons!!!

If I have some UK pennies, I just throw em in the air, or put them in the spinny charity thingy.
