well, i've been trying to do more from usb's, so i got the handle on power applications regarding a USB port.. u can draw 5v and a limited amperage (500~1000mA) from it and can power 2 or 3 fans on a permanent basis.. the 5v line from the usb runs 24/7 as long as you have your psu turned on.. the hard way excellent if u want silent cooling after u turn off the pc.. plus, i'm working on a thing now to more efficiently use this.. anyways, this info is very useful... still, after i will go further into op-amps and other stuff, i think i'll(and all of us) be able to make some nice and nifty usb fan controllers... at least the control part, if not fully integrated with a 12v supply oh, this does help me 10ks

    Red wire = +
    Black wire = -
1000mA is a bit too much for USB, dont you think? I think 500mA is about the best you can suck from one port without burning your stuff.

I used usb to power a cooling fan on a laptop stage I built, it works great! I did measure the amp output but can't remember the reading, I do remember that it was plenty to run most things like fans.

How much strong would a small (P1 CPU cooler) fan would blow on 5V USB? Look at my memory stick thread for more infos..

Well the fan I used was a coolermaster silent fan which doesn't run all that fast anyway. It was rated at 12V and 800mA, I hooked it up to the usb and a molex 12V to compare and there was no difference at all.

So I could hook a small 12V fan direcly on a USB without any resistors or other things and it would work? Cool... ^^
