    Default Zalman VF700-Cu

    [edit]
Here's a simple tutorial for changing a stock gpu cooler to a Zalman VF700-Cu. This gpu cooler is compatable with a lot of cards and is why i bought it. I can upgrade to some of the most expencive cards and not have to worry about compatability issues. It has the same design and materials as the Fatal1ty FS-V7. The diffrence's are the color, the fan is a bit better and has a red led. The installation is the same for both coolers.

OK, so here's the glamour shot

And here is the intended victim. My Saphire x700:

The first thing i had to do was remove the clips holding in the old heatsink. A Pair of needle nose pliers is all you'll need. Watch out however, the springs have some force on them. I had to search the carpet on the other side of the room for a few minutes before i found my clip.

Here is the card with the heatsink removed

You'll need some alcohol and a q-tip to remove the old thermal grease from the chip.

Now i can begin installing the heatsink. I used the supplied hardware in the fassion shown in the instructions to attach the back plate (brace) to the card. I also attached the supplied ram sinks at this point.

Now i apply a liberal amount of thermal grease (i didnt use the whole tube, maybe i should have?) to the top of the chip and set the new heatsink on the card. I slowly tightened the screws making sure to tighten one a little bit then tighten the other and repeating untill the bracket was in contact with the card and fully tightened.

I then installed the card back in the computer and hooked up the fan (i couldnt use the same fan power connecter on the card that the old one used because of the size diffrence). The package comes with an adapter that'll let you connect 4 fans to one molex plug. Luckly i have a fan controller and used that insted.

The package states that the cooler (on average) will reduce the temp of the gpu by 7-10 c and the ram by 10-15 c

My temp after installation is 29.5 c as measured on the back of the card

How loud is it? It looks a lot bigger than the old heatsink and fan. And what were the temps before it was installed?

Definitely not louder than my 4 case fans.
It takes up a slot underneath your video card.

I see the pictures at home but not at work.
That is one dusty default fan. Considered filters?

Lol, I was thinking the same thing about the old one.

The new one looks nice though... I like the copper.

The specs say the noise level is 18.5-28.5 dB. Since i have it hooked up to my fan controler its allways on high.

I've oc'd it from 400/500 to 425/423. I had the core at 427 but while playing vids for an hr my main screen went completly blank but my other monitor worked fine. So i moved it back to 425 just incase.

The original temps were about 32-34 c but again thats whats being measured at the back of the card.

    Nil8 =
I have the sides of my case off all the time so dust is un-avoidable.

I have total of 15 fans in my case
