Heading in to apply for a job tomorrow...

The job itself is going to be a computer tech support service. Partially phone calls, partially house calls.
It's a sub-portion of a phone/TV/ISP company.


I've already got my "nice" clothes set up (tan trousers, 3-button pullover shirt, good shoes).


My question is, what advice do you all have?

Don't relax too much. Give a strong hand shake. Highlight your strong points in the interview and try to turn negatives into positives.

^I'm afraid of being not relaxed enough, and I know not to give wimpy-noodle or death-grip, but still good advice. I hope to convert the negatives into positives.

I would say this, trust your gut. If the interview is ending and you don't think you've made the impression you wanted, make a pointed effort to make that impression at the end.

I was in an interview. I was asked questions and answered them. I was thanked for my time and a hand was extended to end the interview. Instead of shaking it and leaving, I asked if they would like to hear about some of my experience and work ethic. The interview continued and I essentially let them know the kind of passionate hard worker I am. I saw the interviewer put a tick mark on my application and was offered the job later that week.

In addition to a firm handshake, eye contact is a must!

Being relaxed is OK, but be attentive! Treat the interviewer like they are the only one on the planet at that moment. Don't elaborate too much, but make sure you get the pertinent information across to them.

BTW: you can never be overdressed for an interview (unless you wear a tux to a welder interview).

Be prepared to show how you are different/better than the other candidates. Don't be afraid of weaknesses wither. Shows you are human and know your limits.

I forgot to mention asking for an application before going in. Totally forgot that. I used to pull them from their web sites or asked a receptionist for one. That way when you show up and they ask you to fill out an application, you can hand it to them complete with your resume attached. Shows you are prepared.

I am going to be in the market for a new job soon, so I better be paying attention here...

She handed me one. All I said was that I was wondering if they were hiring. Didn't even ask for an application. They said "maybe". I'm hopeful, though.
