Me neither! I went and got a decent (external) CDD yesterday with all the usual 'DVD' and 'RW' logos and such on the faceplate so this time I'm safe. As I said, I'd never even considered a Compact Disc ONLY drive but I guess it's the logos that gives it away as my cheapo one only has the CD logo on the front.

Ah well we live and learn I guess...

Oh, did I mention my new drive is bright pink? Cool eh

i kept seeing that you were referring to the external optical drive as a cdd. i'm so used to my sidework customers using the wrong terminology that i simply assumed you knew what you were talking about but just kept typing "cdd". but yeah, you're right, why would anyone get a com[pact disk only drive when for the same price you can get a dvd drive.

i hope all your issues are sorted now with your new pink drive.

little bit of masking tape and some spray paint can do wonders.

Funnily enough xr4, I've just sat down and realised that of course new games (and not so new ones) are all DVD Roms rather than CDs. Something that hadn't even crossed my mind until now!

Anyway it looks like I'm stuck with the useless CDD as well as my new DVD RW etc. one so I'm thinking about just swapping over the shells to make my pink one black. That may be unnecessary though as I've started work on my new desk and I have a nice location in mind to stealth the new drive away anyway.

I'm waiting for the last few parts to arrive for the desk build but when they get here I'll upload the worklog. I've taken pics of what's been done so far but I think I'll wait till it's all finished before I share the project this time. I was told delivery would be 3-5 days and today is no.2 so could be finished by the end of the week!

I'm pretty sure what I'm doing is unique so stay tuned, hopefully it'll turn out how I imagine it!

So, is it a standard 5.25" full-height external CDD?

If so, you MAY be able to upgrade JUST the drive. Probably IDE.

It's a pretty slimline drive mate. Not much bigger than it has to be for fiting all the gubbins inside! Probably equivalent to 2 jewel cases stacked on top of each other. And pink

They're actually exactly the same, hence my consideration to swap over the pink and black cases. This is a link to the actual item purchased from Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003NTHKTO Strangely enough, the second image on that page shows the case partially disassembled but I'm not sure why... That to me suggests it should be easy enough to swap over the hardware between my 2 items...

    Yeah.

Still, if it is an external SATA drive, you could put a BD-ROM in there....
