Upon booting up, the machine indicates that it is running a 1.4 GHz processor, exactly 1/2 its rated speed.

Is this a hardware issue or a settings issue?

If a settings issue, how do I fix it?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if P4s throttled down when not being stressed, but try running prime95 with cpu-z open. The multi might jump up to 28x when under load. If not, check it out in the bios and manually set it to 2.8.

Are there any thermal issues or anything?
    I'll procrastinate tomorrow.

800 MHz FSB CPU being read as 400. Effectively halves the speed.

Your board may not support it. The boards you list are different revisions.

    Intel 845G-BCH:400/533 MHz
board doesn't support the FSB you need for that particular CPU

I'm assuming you can't manually set the bus freqencies in the bios since its a HP board. But you can check, it'd be F10 or DEL or F2 for the bios (varies by vendor, but i think HP is F10) it would be pretty obvious which setting it is. if your confused just take a picture of the bios screen with a digital camera and post it here.

also, what does your DXDIAG say your processor speed is? sometimes CPU:Z can be wrong

    Thanks for your suggestions guys.

I have been working on some other projects and have dusted off this machine and am giving it another go. Based on your feedback, I will be taking a closer look at the compatibility of the board and the CPU. I have quite a few P4's in my archives so I will check what candidates might be a better fit against the compatibility charts put out by the respective manufacturers.

Also: while searching for a P4 CPU vs HP Pavilion 754n / MS-6577 Xenon compatibility chart, I ran across this info. Perhaps most of you are already aware of this requirement. I was not, and perhaps other readers might have been unaware as well. Good to know.

"If the FSB is 800MHz (as mentioned in the specs), then you'd need PC3200 memory. "

    I'll post the results.

    Thanks once again.
