Default Introduction to LucidLogix and the new Virtu

A new story entry has been added:

[drupal=650]Introduction to LucidLogix and the new Virtu[/drupal]

    By: Charles Gantt

Last week we posted a press release from Gigabyte announcing their partnership with LucidLogix on their new Intel Z68 chipset based motherboards. Everyone knows who Gigabyte is, but not many of us have heard of LucidLogix before. So before I get into the body of this article I would like to take a second to help familiarize you with who LucidLogix is. Keep reading after the jump.

If this works half as well as it is purported to, then yes, it WILL be a game changer. Perhaps it is just my old biases creeping into my judgement, but I always get a little leery of solutions that add an extra layer of complexity to a situation. However, on the grounds that I haven't seen this implementation in action, I'll reserve judgement for now. Admittedly, though, it looks likely it could (potentially) be an awesome advancement.

This looks cool! But I agree with DynamoNED. Seems like unnecessary processes running. I DO like the idea though... I wanna see real world testing from people I trust. *cough* TBCS *cough cough*

You will see some real world testing very soon! Can you point out the dead link AmEv? I will fix it if you can.

Very interesting. It'll definitely be neat to see how well this works. One thing though; the article talks a lot about it integrating with Sandy Bridge graphics and pulling processing from other cards, but do you know if it would work in a similar fashion with a normal video card instead? Depending on where the software ties into the rendering stack I wouldn't think it would be a very different process, but...yeah.

Oh, and sorry to be the editing freak, but..
This will save a lot of wasted energy for those of us with multiple GPUs that suck up 500+ watts of power every hour.
One watt is equal to one joule per second, ie, it's already a measurement of power consumption over time...so saying "[x] watts every hour" doesn't actually mean anything.

From the information I have read, Virtu will only work on Intel Z68 boards and infact buying a Z68 board from one of Lucid Technology's partners is the only way to get Virtu. So in essence this will only work with sandybridge processors.

You can still plug directly into your discrete GPU but I think you lose Virtu's features that way. I will shoot an email to Lucid for further clarification.

Well I know they say on their website that they have an add-in card as well, so they must have something planned...hopefully...
