Default Newsdesk: New Facebook temporary password service.

A new story entry has been added:

    By Colin M. Ormsby

Like it or loathe it, facebook is a wildly popular social networking site. Like anything which becomes popular or well used, it has become a more and more popular target for scammers and the people who run the site have stepped up with a new feature to help combat at least one avenue of potential fraud... more.

I think it's a pretty neat feature really. I only use FB at home and work (for my work's page that I maintain, of course ) so I don't need to worry about it, but it's a great idea

I absolutely agree that it is a good idea in principle - but as I mentioned, my only reservation is that if you leave your phone on a table, your little sister etc etc can then very easily get into your facebook... A simple PIN number would help in that regard, as long as you remember to delete your sent messages of course

Interesting service. Easy, convenient, though as slave mentioned, easily exploitable.

A few ways to fix that:
    1) Don't have a facebook account.
    2) Don't register any phone with your account.
----Problematic if you forget your password or loose access to the account for whatever reason
    3) Register an IP phone of some sort with it.
----ex, Google Voice can send/receive sms
    4) Password-protect your phone
----note: I'll admit that I'm a bit of a hypocrite on this one...I used to do it, but it's just such a pain...

All that being said, with anything you have to find a middle ground between security and convenience, and while I don't think they've quite found it yet, it looks like they're headed in the right direction.
That we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously.
