Where do modders get this thick lightweight aluminum from?? All I can ever find is heavy, expensive frickin' steel.

It's not cheap. A lot of them purchase it from a metal supplier locally, or otherwise are machinists and get it from work.
Damn!

onlinemetals.com is my favorite place
They seem fairly priced, fast shipping, and they include a lot of information on their products (composition, physical properties, uses, etc)
metalsdepot.com is another good one

Thrift store.
If you don't need full metal sheets then you might be able to just cannibalize the sizes you need from some used junky old appliance.
It might be hard to find large metal panels this way unless you buy something like a suitcase or refrigerator, but I hunt thrifts all the time when I'm looking for small sheets of perforated metal mesh (better known at TBCS as Modder's Mesh, perhaps). One of these costs less than $5 and is good for a half-dozen 120mm fans:
My mind says Technic, but my body says Duplo.

You're looking for 2024 or 5052 most likely. If you can afford it 7075 is the lightest - here's a grading chart
