Good call, Cevinzol. Another good container are baby food jars - great for small screws and other bits.

    Plus, strained peas! Mmmmmm! :p

coffee cans or jelly jars, everyone has em (at least the jars...) and its not like you do anything with them besides throw them away afterwards.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

    If you have no budget.
    - save your lunch money (thats what I did to pay my ISP way back in the dark ages).
    - check garage sales, antique malls and auctions.
lots of people won't look at at tool unless its all shiny chrome ala sears craftsman. Some of the best tools will look rusty because they are made of high carbon steel. You can get them cheap or free and with a little work you have a tool.
I have tons of tools some over 100 years old that work just fine.
Collecting tools is a life time persuit.

    What's the toothbrush for?

A coping saw is cheap. You should be able to afford one and it can cut metal, wood, pretty much everything: it has a large brace so you can get it in deep and cut thick metal, unlike a hacksaw, which is pretty useless for cutting any metal thicker than a 1/2 inch pipe.

I used it to get into those difficult corners.

Might I suggest a toolbox full of screws. Anyone who has a workshop has a tonne of screws and such everywhere.

You're going to have a hard time working with that, but surely you can borrow some tools, being on a military base? You must have some mechanics around who'll have some basic tools you can use, right?

Ask around, i borrowed a lot of my tools.
