    Default Am2/Am3

So, I'm going to begin upgrading my PC piecemeal style. I am thinking the MOBO is first. Can I put my athlon 64 x2 into an am3 slot and not have a problem? Or will it just not work?

Assuming that CPU is socket AM2 (didn't they also come in 939?), I think it will depend on the board. If it supports AM2 as well it should do fine. I've seen boards that list support for AM2/AM2+/AM3, but then I've seen others that just list AM3.

Ok, so I'll just have to get the CPU same time as the board. The board I'm buying is AM3 only.

AM3 CPUs have a integrated memory controller than can handle DDR3 and DDR2. AM2/AM2+ only have integrated DDR2 controllers.
