I'd get some backups off it to be safe, and maybe start testing it to find out for sure. PC Check is good, Spinrite is EXCELLENT. I highly recommend buying it!

Hmm.. can you try a different cable on it? I'd slave it to another machine, or attach it with a USB interface to get the data from it. If possible, shut it right down, and let it sit for a few hours before attempting the backups.. sometimes just cooling it off will let it run better.

Check it for loose wires, I've had that be the problem before
