Default New Camera Yesterday - warning 30+ pics here

So I've been itching for a new camera recently. My current main camera is (well was) a Fuji Finepix S5600 - SLR type body with 10x Optical Zoom and 5mp. Nothing amazing now but when I bought it shortly after it came out, it was pretty much the best camera available at the price point. A few years later and I decided I was about due for an upgrade, so I treated myself to this...

    Casio EX-FH20

9.1mp and 20x zoom, plus 40 fps still shooting (at slightly reduced 7mp resolution) and up to 1000 fps video (at stupidly reduced virtually useless res lol)

It ticked the two boxes I really wanted ticked, the bigger zoom and the higher MP, and the 40 fps shooting will really come into it's own when I go watch my friend motorcycle racing - catching a good pic of him is a real pain. I wanted to have a little play with the 40fps setting and this is what I came up with - not to bad, if you ask me, bearing in mind today we had probably the worst light in history for photography heh.

Watch the rock in the top centre of the first photograph...

I also wanted to compare 10x to 20x zoom. These are 100% optical zooms - one of the first thing I do with any camera I get my hands on is turn off the software zoom. The following pics were taken from exactly the same spot, within seconds of each other, with the cameras on full auto - I was after an idea of the difference in the zooms, not the capabilities of the manual controls etc...

    Fuji Finepix S5600 @ 10x/5.1mp on the left, Casio EX-FH20 @ 20x 9mp on the right

Yup - definitely a difference there

ha, i thought the first couple of pictures that rock was a drip of water on the lens.

my brother got one of those cameras. may have been a lower model, not sure.

    40fps is very impressive...mine gets 3-4fps It's a bit older though.
And was that rock drop shoot on a tripod? Nice hands if not...
Why do they still even bother with digital zoom? It's not even 'zooming'. I guess it's just 1 more feature they can market though.
    I'll procrastinate tomorrow.

No tripod - in fact lol - that was holding the camera one-handed - bear in mind, it was only 1 second I had to keep it steady for - needed the other hand to throw the rock :p

The 40fps is the main reason I bought it if I'm honest - it can also do 1000fps video but the resolution is so low it's basically just to prove it can do it *shrug*

I was kinda hoping to keep the fuji as a spare, but my niece over in the states has claimed it. I gave her it a couple of times during visits to take pics of parties etc and she loved it to bits. I did think about giving it to my son, but I really think it'd end up sitting in his room gathering dust. I'm fairly certain it'll see regular use with Kari

TBH, I never had any trouble catching Indy cars racing with my old Canon Powershot A60 (2mp, 1.5fps burst).

I got one of the Canon Powershot S6 IS cameras for my birthday a couple years back, and it's not bad, but I wish that my wife had spent a little extra and gone full SLR. Oh well..

Catching him is easy on the far side of the track lol - but when he's laughing at 160mph, 15 feet away, it gets tough :p I have literally dozens of half a bike pics, not to mention a handful of empty track shots :p

hehe.. yeah, I know what that's like. We had it easy though, we were sitting on turn 1 at the Edmonton Champ Car race in 2005.. pretty good spot for overtakes, and since they are slowing for the corner, easy to get great shots, even at full zoom.

Haha. True, 1/40 doesn't allow too much time to move. I guess I was assuming it was around dusk with longer exposures, but that isn't the case. I conclude that I wasn't thinking. It happens to the best of us.
