    Default Custom Desk

My current desk is small, doesn't quite fill the space, and doesn't have enough storage for my needs, so rather than spend £100 on a new desk (Which i couldn't find any that i liked) im going to spend £100 on building one myself.

I have designed these on paper, worked out all the dimensions, so i copied them onto sketch-up to make sure all my calculations were correct.

    so without further ado:

i am currently looking at adding lighting to the desk, etc etc.

No leg room? Or is that what the center is for? I find desks I can tuck the chair up into hurt my back a lot faster.

    I'm inclined to agree ...

XcoM ... could you bring the upper surface and keyboard tray forward so they extend out beyond the lower section?

Alternatively .. instead of the large drawer maybe make three smaller ones down the left side and leave a proper space for your legs in the middle.

O/w from the design you have I think backache could easily result.

Nice sketchup work btw ... never have got the hang of it .. I still use the back of envelopes to design things on

EDIT: Here ... quick sketch of what I was trying to describe:

thanks for the comments guys, i did think of the leg problem already, but since i don't have anywhere to put my legs atm (And havent for a few years) i've gotten used to it, the keyboard is on a tray and slides out, and i really need storage space,

The pc space is where i hope to put a PC when i can afford one.

The wood i was planning on using was Conti Board

Its really good stuff, built a few things with it, really easy to work with, and a really nice finish too

it's like chipboard, but super compressed so its really strong, and with a melamine layer on it to give it a nice finish, you can even buy melamine on a roll to touch up areas

I've worked with hickory once. It was beautiful wood, it was very heavy and solid, and it was *cheap*. When I went to build with it I found out why. I may as well have been working with marble. I dulled carbide tools with that stuff. I would build with it again, but never anything as extensive as a desk.

haha yeah it is HARD wood. lol a lot of the pieces I have are pretty close to about the right lengths for something like a desk, so I probably could get away with not cutting a lot of it, probably wouldnt do the whole thing outta hickory mainly just the desktop.

I broke a 1/2" thick lagbolt in a 3-4" diameter hickory bedpole once when I worked at a furniture store. snapped it right off about halfway into the pole. (AND the hole was pre-drilled out!! I was using a hand ratchet to put the bolt in too.)
