Well you could just remove the cover of a standard one. Only problem is that you'd have to manually put the magnet in the center once you put the disc in. The magnet is located in the cover and is there to keep the disc locked onto the spindle, so it doesn't fly off.

my ps1 has one, and it doesn't need a magnet
speaking of the ps1, thats why i wanted a drive like that in the first place, to add a little nostalgia to the top of my case
Perhaps it would work best with a slip, laptop-style drive; the kind where you press the disk onto a spindle.
Mach did one for his bakelite mod here. I think it was basically a basic laptop drawer load ROM and there was some soldering and rewiring to do.

could one not take a ps1 apart and replace the drive components with whatever drive u need and just the top down method? Theoretically it should be possible no?
