Default Two mods I did a while back but never posted :p

    Hey guys!

I've been a long time semi-lurker here (probably around 3 to 4 years now :o). I did a few mods a while back, but never really got a hold of a decent camera until now.

    Anyway, here they are:

This first one is a mod I did to my file server. I added a window in the top so that I could see the DVD's spin around. In retrospect, I probably should have gotten a black DVD drive, but the beige one doesn't bother me much. :p

The second one is a case I made out of this board that is sort of halfway between being cardboard and wood. The original intention was to make a case smaller than a normal desktop case... but I somehow really screwed up some measurements (me trying to do things too fast :p) and it ended up being much bigger than expected.

As you can see from the next photo, there is a lot of wasted space. I'm planning on building a new case in which I'm going to properly measure everything. I'm also going to try and procure a better material such as a thin steel :p. This case, although not really evident in the photos, is actually sinking into itself on one side...

Thought I'd just share this with everyone since I've been meaning to actually post something on this site for some time now :p

Peg board case! That is SWEET!

I'm planning on picking up some pegboard soon for a wall rack in my room!

how do you mismeasure that badly? forget to change Inches to cm's?

well. interesting idea. nice idea for a mod, as it has lots of ciculation holes.

now, if i must be critical (which you should take as a good thing and in a positive up building way, and not a negative put-down way) but i notice the fan holes aren't round. next time, get a 8cm and 12cm hole saw, and drill some perfect holes. Also, i notice none of the angles you used to hold the case together are equal lengths or l symmetrical. different heights and different lenghts.

Little things that go a long way in a finished project.

either way, first mods never go perfect, and, generally, most people improve all the time.

I give a thumbs regardless. i wouldnt cut open my dvd drive, so kudos to having more b@lls than me

Yeah, everybody starts somewhere! Every time I see that peg board case, I smile. Don't know why! Great novelty in it!

As far as the windowed drive. They aren't that hard to do. Nothing really dangerous. Quite a bit of fun, really! I used to do them a lot. Used CD cases for the window as it is easy to find, and very thin after you snap the edges off.

Ya, I really have no idea what I did, lol. I think it's because I really rushed it, since I really needed a case to hold my computer together.

now, if i must be critical (which you should take as a good thing and in a positive up building way, and not a negative put-down way) but i notice the fan holes aren't round. next time, get a 8cm and 12cm hole saw, and drill some perfect holes. lol, ya I would have used a hole saw, but all I had available was a really old and not very accurate jig-saw. All the parts were recycled from stuff I found in my basement, and I rushed cutting the angle irons.

This case was supposed to be kind of a temporary case, but I got too busy to make a new one. I'm hoping to make a new one this summer some time, with proper measurements and tools this time :p A jigsaw, dremel and steel-cutting saw (don't remember the proper name :p) really aren't enough.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

What type of drill do you have?

Stores like Lowes typically have hole saws in a bunch of sizes. The ones I get aren't very accurate so I use one that's smaller than necessary, then make it larger by some other means. I just got a 2 3/4" sioze, which is a little less than 80mm.

I've had this drill for years and it has been excellent. It has enough torque to break your wrist if the bit gets hung up, but it's small enough to run off the inverter in my truck.
