Thread: Fan filter material

  1. #1

    Default Fan filter material

Can anyone recommend a good material to use as a fan filter-type mesh, and a place to get it? I'm going to need about 15" square for my the big frontal fan in my next project.

It'd be awesome if it was black and semi-opaque, so that the inner workings of my computer were more hidden.

I remember seeing someone using lady's pantie hose stretched tight on a fan once for a filter.

After searching I realized this thread is years old so may as well post a link in case someone searches for it on the forum...

I've found a lot of foams are too dense and actually choke the fan more than filter dust. I wish I knew the exact name for the plastic-like filters companies use in the 5.25 covers. Lian and Thermaltake in particular.

I saw one build where the guy cut out a 240x240 square on his case, mounted 4 120mm fans and fitted the air cleaner/filter setup from a small-block chevy on the side. cheap, effective, much finer filter material than most computers need, and you can drive down to autozone and replace it for $5.

I tried using those aluminum mesh filters, I really didn't see any benefit, they would get clogged up and the inside still was dusty.
