VLC is a dvd/file/media player that handles a ton of formats. Its free and contains most of the basic codecs used afaik. It's played everything I've thrown at it.

I've had the green issue before, on my old Pentium M laptop. Don't really remember what I did as it was quite a few years ago, but I know I updated windows media player, and downloaded a codec pack and one of those two things worked as I didn't have the issue after.
