Take some of the apps. that load at start-up out of the start-up menu. Only having 1 account on your log in screen will help. Buy a Raptor hard drive. They spin at 10000 rpm and load the os faster. Clean out spy-ware using ad-aware and spybot search and destroy. Good luck.Originally Posted by wretched73
faster start ups and boot times will be had just after a fresh install. After a while your choices on decreasing the time it takes to boot are limited no matter what software you use. Just think about it, software can't remove all the crap\porn\mp3's\divx movies\pictures of the doom 3 mod\mashie in his blue speedos you have on your system. Take your time to back up your important data (hopefully not mashie in his blue speedos) and do a fresh install once in a while. Its a bitch to get all your settings back the way you had them but the increase in performance and lag will more than make up for it. It is also sometimes the only means to permanantly get rid of spyware which is one of the main culprits of decreased performance. However one tool I've used with moderate success is:
Bootvis analyzes and greatly improves your bootup time. It is a Microsoft created tool designed to analyze your sytem and provide you with the means to improve boottime, resume from standy and hibernation.
*note Microsoft did publish an article concerning issues with bootvis but its not a real threat the only problem is that Bootvis can not optimize since it's missing the log file it created.
Buy another hard drive. Backup your data, reinstall, configure and tweak to your liking, install mission critical apps. Image the drive to the other hard drive. Now when you reinstall, you've got a quick way that has your system the way you like it.
