Default SP3 for Xp messed things up...

I decided I would install Service pack 3 for XP since I still run XP on my desktop but things really went nuts. Apparently SP3 decided to mess-up the $MFT and chkdsk was unable to repair it. Ended up running TestDisk and then chkdsk finally fixed the problem. Anyone else have an issue like this?

Yeah, im not sure what happened. Im going to download it from Microsoft and try to install the full package. It was part of the auto-updates and installed through that but went bonkers. Maybe it was just a fluke.

A lot of machines reported issues with installing SP3. Just make sure you have the means to get access to your data, or if not, backup your important data before trying again.

The only time I ever had a problem with SP3 on the 100+ machines at work was with VPN clients. Some of the big name VPN people didn't bother to update their stuff for SP3, and I had about 10 BSODs shortly after the SP3 install. I won't name names though, as that problem has since been fixed. Other than that I'd say yours was probably a fluke. Glad you got it back together though.

I had troubles getting a full install, kept reverting back to SP2, but I just had to exit completely out of my antivirus software and it installed fine.

Haven't really had any problems with SP3 on home or pro, might get the occasional bsod after installing it but we found a quick fix for that at work.

The big problem we found is trying to install it on media center, it fails probably 2/3 of the time, most them end up having to be fresh install too. So we just stopped installing it on mce.
