Sub Mod

A few weeks ago, I decided to mod my logitech x-230 sub woofer, a rather basic mod but still, its a mod!

I planned to cut a circle out of the side and add a perspex window (I think the perspex i ordered is 3mm thick), move the PCB to the bottom seated horizontally and cover the gap where it previously was.... I have also planned to add a few blue LED's..

Anyway, heres how it started:

First of all, I removed all the components:

I marked out the shape on the side:

I tried to borrow a jigsaw off someone but the few people i tried did not have one, so i used a drill and 10mm drill piece to chain-drill the shapes and then a half round file to give the shape. The picture below shows 2 different stages of this, the filing and the drilling:

Thats all for now, my next job is to finish off cutting the shapes, I will then cut the horizontal rectangle for the volume and I/O socket. After that I will install the window (in 2 parts as it will not fit in as 1 piece)

A question about the window: Should I glue it (using hot glue gun) or bolt it?

If i bolt it, will it "rattle" and produce a poor sound? or would it be ok?

EDIT: ive just looked at the times on those last 3 pictures... Yes that is how long it took me, working non-stop!!!! (well, i had a 20 min break when i went to look at next doors car)

Greco, the MDF is at least 6-8mm thick, isnt that U-channel designed for 1-2mm thick materials? (such as PC cases). I think it is a good idea just wondering if it would fit around the mdf.

anyway, I have now finished the shapes and cut the plastic to size....

I then cut the perspex with a tennon saw:

This is how it fits in: (I must admit, it was a bit of gues work where to cut but it wasnt fatal because I had lots of play and could mount the perspex vertically or horizontally)

Cover removed from theperspex:

It is then given a "frosted" effect:

The transformer had to be moved from its original place in order to fit in with the PCB being mounted horizontally

Ive started spraying the speakers (not the sub.... they will both be matching) Ive decided to use a mealic blue and silver.... pictures will be uploaded tomorrow

I love the blue colour ive used!!

also thinking about spraying my mouse, monitor and possibly keyboard to match!

Painted speakers and mouse (not the best of paint jobs but hey! the masking tape did not stick very well at the top of the speakers so some paint managed to 'slip' through....

Another question:
I have this paper 'stencil' of a flame design i want sprayed on the top, any ideas how i could get it on?

I was thinking about just spraying the paper ans sticking it on the top with glue.... probably not the best method... any ideas? Here is a picture:

Another update:

Finished the paint job, done the flames (after several attempts of using sticky back plastic, I gave up and decided to spray the paper and glue it on!!)
Attatched the side panels
Wired up the lights and tidyed the wiring
Added a switch for the sub to be turned on or off

As you can see, I have sprayed the monitor and keyboard aswell.

Far from perfect, just waiting for some feet for the sub now and i might try to find a better source of power for the lights.
