Right now it's going to be HL2 just based on the different gameplay types (sp/hl2dm/cs:s). Doom3's sp is fun but tedious and the mp is just horrible.

In the long run, Doom3's engine is going to far surpass that of the hl2 in terms of popular games that will be produced off of it. Quake IV is going to be the first sign of this imo.

Probably. Quake IV, Doom 3 with a new skin...

The HL2 engine looks better imo.

With good reason...valve spent a lot of time on it. It was supost to revolutionise the way we play games. I guess it would of if its release date hadent been pushed back a year.

I believe the D3 engine will crush the HL2 engine. People just haven't been able to see what it truly can do with just a lil' ol' flashlight. Again, wait for q4.

Well you may say that the HL2 engine did not revolutionise the way we play games but the fact is that things like Normal mapping were originally created by valve for the source engine. And look at all the games using Normal Mapping now. I have to say that Normal Mapping is one of the greatest innovations to the gaming world in a long time, it is just so beautiful. But yes the d3 engine will probably be more popular. Then again no one used the HL2 engine because valve were so secretive, whereas Id allowed the Quake guys to come in a and look at there production and everything. I can't say who will win but I think in the long term HL2 will be the most influential on gaming and Doom 3 in the short term.
    There is no other choice.

I agree. HL2 with the new expansion The Lost Coast kicks D3's ass. The new lightning effects are truely amazing. But dont get too excited, because they can both crawl under the carpet when the Unreal 3 engine comes out.

UE3 is going to be amazing, but thats not saying valve or ID wont make something better. Valve I know is already working on a HL3 and ID is sure to have another doom released. Its an ongoing thing. Cant wait untill one day we will see on the screen exactly how we see things around us.

Doom 3 has the most advanced engine but valve did definately hire better texture artists than ID.

After completing both I'm definately more keen on playing HL2 again than Doom 3.

Now UE3 based games that take the full advatage of a PPU is something completely different though... The future is bright.
