Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme

with my case mod i got one of those nice little ultra 120 extremes, and i was ecpecting lower temps than im getting.

at about idle im getting 45C 42C 43C and 37C for my cores. its very odd how far apart my first and last core are when it comes to temperature. Im only running at the stock speed of 2.4GHz and i was thinking of overclocking until i saw the temps... if i remember correctly im not getting much cooler than my old stock cooler.

According to Artic Silver it may take up to 200 hours to "reach full thermal conductivity" so im not sure if thas my problem or if i should be getter better cooling. I have a pretty good fan on my heatsink at about 100 CFM and my case is cooled very well with 4 fans running about 85 CFM and 2 at about 45cfm

so idk what is up.

EDIT: it also seems my core speed is fluctuating? its always happening, very odd. for example in core temp sometimes it shows at 2399 MHZ and other times 2401 Mhz and etc. Another program i have shows it fluxuating form anwhere from 1950 MHZ up to 2400 mhz...

you have speed step on (C1E in bios) which underclocks it while its not being used to save money and heat. if you are going to be overclocking shut it off so it will not mess with the overclock.


temps seem a bit high, change to another paste, MX-2 in my new fav. and remount. also consider another fan in a push pull config.

Yes, you are looking at around 250 hours for full conductivity. The paste needs to heat itself to set and if you put it together in the past few days you won't be at full yet. Download Prime95 and run it for a few days, 8 hours at least. It'll stress your computer enough to make a lot of heat and speed up the waiting period.

Similar setup, Idling at 34-32c across the 4 cores. The temps aren't that high, but make sure you turn off your machine and 'thermal cycle'.

another thing i forgot to add was try the penny mod. as the picture below shows, put a penny or w/e under the bracket and then mount it. it will put more pressure on the cpu and should thus give better heat transfer.

Any other small (in size) change that you can get? Yuo could probably use just about anything that you find about that size for it.

Well... if I bothered to clean up my room, I'd have a penny... but anyone got dimensions of a penny?

A penny is 19 mm in diameter by 1.4 mm thick. sounds about right.

As for heat, i did the penny mod... it took forever seeing as my bracket for my HSF slipped behind the motherboard, so i had to take it all apart. but i did it and notice a small if any difference
