    Default Silent Case?

New member. First post. Go easy on me...

I have always wanted to build my own computer but have never been able to do it for as low a price as I could buy one, especially on ebay which is where I got a great deal on my current computer. I decided that it would be a good idea for me to get started by transferring my current computer into a new case. I plan to buy a silent case as my computer is obnoxiously loud. It is a Dell XPS Gen 3. I like it well enough but like I said, it is loud and I want to build a computer anyway. I would like the imput of this experienced community as to what "silent" case I should get.

    Thanks!!!

All cases are silent, unless you drop them down the stairs. I think what you are asking is, is there a case that totally covers the operating noise of a computer while it's running. The answer is no. The case almost always has to be open to air flow to let air circulate, which is usually accomplished by fans (generally the noisiest part of any computer). Now there are fanless solutions to most of the items the normally use fans (CPU,PSU,GPU, etc.) but I believe most of them assume some airflow through the case from case fans though. I could be wrong on that, you'd want to investigate.

The only (nearly) silent computer that I can think of off-hand is a notebook. You might want to look into that.

This is an interesting site that actually covers modding computers to be as quiet as possible.

This is a links page from Silend.se, which features lots of pages discussing this very thing.

    Hope these help.

The only way to minimize noise from a computer is to carefully select the components you use inside it. Use large diameter slow rotation 120mm fans instead of whiny 80mm ones for example. You can also use sound deadening pads in the panels to further reduce noise - passively cooled parts like graphics cards etc to reduce the NUMBER of fans but competely silent is virtually impossible - there are a couple of cases by zalman which use no fans but you'll still get SOME noise from drive rotation etc - another option is a so called silent case - I built a PC for a friend a couple months back based on a Silentium T2 case - pain in the ass to build in, but you have to look for the LEDs to make sure it's on - but thats only because of other background noise - it's VERY quiet, but its NOT silent
