Default LGA775 Heatsinks with pushpins (or whatever their called)

I was reading somewhere that intel heatsinks with that cruddy pushpin system can bend motherboards. I just got a new dfi board and when I was installing my heatsink when the board made a bit of a crackling noise (no visible damage) because of the pressure that has to be used to get one of the last of the four pushpins attached. Anyone happen to know of a good way to support the board while applying pressure to clip the pins in? my dfi board was a doa, so I dont know if that was my fault or it was a true doa, but I dont want to mess it up again with my new one.

Best way to fix this issue is buy a heatsink that screws in.

as long as you only bent the board 1cm tops pushing in the pin then it should be fine. i noticed on my dads pc (back when i used it as i had no pc) i was replacing the thermal paste with arctic silver 5 and i was bulged in the middle. i am going to water cool soon but since then i've used the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro, it was only 25 and it works good for the cost. and mainly it doesn't bulged the board.

if your still not wanting to buy a cheap, better than stock heatsink then when you install the stock heatsink do it with the motherboard out of the case. use your one hand and support the back of it then with the other push the pin in. it should not bend at all if done that way, though it may still bulged as that is not in your control.

ok thanks, it probably just a doa as one of my ram has leds which lit up which points to something besides the vreg's. Actually I found a nice solution from an old shuttle case, it came with these rubber (feet?) they put on the motherboard tray to support the motherboard. put four of those on reinstalling my old foxconn board and there was no flex at all

That's actually a simple but effective solution!

Hey you beat me to it. I use that method for customer builds that don't include a new HS. I hate those push pin clips btw. Ship a system too many times and they pop off...

The stock heatsink warps my DFI LANParty 680i LT mobo something shocking, can't wait for water cooling.
