interesting, i wonder why the would put pads on one and paste on others... and of all cpu's why put a pad on a quad.

I took it off and put it back on but the CPU temp still went up to 90c
if there not all poking out then its not in right. as much of a hassle as it is, i would take out the motherboard then make sure all 4 pins are in correctly. turn it on then check temps.
also make sure the push pin tops are in the correct position, seen here.

there must be something wrong with the motherboard, or the heatsinc because it simply is not fitting. When one pin is pushed in correct the opposite side pin does not push all the way in no matter how hard i push it.

Do you have any thermal paste by chance? If not, get some and clean the bottom of the HSF and the CPU with Methylated Spirits and apply a small blob of the thermal paste onto the CPU and spread it out carefully with something like a credit card or your finger in a freezer bag. Then put the heatsink on.

ok, first off take the heatsink off and push each pin and make sure all 4 work properly without the motherboard. if they do then reset them to be pushed and place it on the motherboard. push the one pin in that worked but this time. once it's in place on the opposite side hold the heatsink with your one had and make sure you can see the clear part of the pin go through the other side of the motherboard. if it is then push the black part and it *should* work. then do the same with the last 2 remaining. if none of that works you need to take it back/rma it unfortunately.

    One with screws.

IMO, the pushpins were the worst idea Intel has had in a long time. I had the same problem with the heatsink that came with my E6600 (which is why I got the Freezer 7 Pro).

I'd have to agree with crenn, get a new heatsink. It'll be better than the Intel one anyways.

I see a common thread with all those HSFs your recommended

Beware of the HSF you get because some aftermarket HSFs.... use intel's pushpin mounting system (I've had the 880g HSF.... fall off literally during transport, although it was my friend's system.... but we were going to a LAN Party). Be careful what you get and research a little. I didn't find out how bad it was until after it fell off.

For reference, this is the one he had:

This is the one I would recommend:

(There was an extreme version but it seems to be missing)
