    Exclamation 4gigs of Gskill...no boot

this post is for my dad. He has XP & Vista on his PC. He upgraded to 4gb's of ram today and he had some problems getting it to work. So I went over to his house and got his timings right and everything was kool. Now the problem that I cant fix is that it will boot into vista just fine ...but NOT XP. It will try to boot but then it just restarts. What am I missing ? I didnt work on it very long but I am sitting @ my house and i just cant figure it out. I know that XP wont see all 4gb but what would cause it not to boot @ all on XP and boot fine on vista...its driving me crazy...I think its something simple that I just missed. help me please I am going insane..AAAAARRRRGGGGGGG

I had a similar problem that I couldn't diagnose (well, I'm too impatient) so I just did a repair install of Windows, and it's been working great since. Try that, and see what happens.

I have Gskill ram in my computer. Mine you MUST overclock for it to work normally or you get those exact problems. I pumped the volts to 2.0 and then pushed it to 800 then they started running with no problems.

i'm going to guess you bought this ram:
    240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

well its really 667 ram that must be overclocked to 800 to run normally.

what is the motherboard on that computer?

One other long shot is to go into the boot.ini for Winxp (on the Root of the dive the xp is installed on) add /PAE at the end of the line that reads like this
    multi(??)disk(??)rdisk(??)partition(??)\WINDOWS="M icrosoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

(The ?? should be numbers but there based on the number of Drives and which one XP is installed on...so I put the ?? to help avoid confusion)

This should let the system see the whole 4 Gb of Ram....This switch may cause issues If your running SP2 and DMA drivers (in 32 bit mode)....That's why I said it's a long shot.

    Good Luck,

@ Scotty I have tried that already....thanks though
@crazy bob...I told my dad exactly what you typed and I think he was lost after the "go into boot.ini" ...hehe
@haha49 I will try to fiddle with the memory overlap and see what happens.

another question is all the ram the same speed? like all ddr800 or 677 i tried sticking a stick of ram in my other computer and it had problems seeing it as they were both 2 diffrent speeds.. if you have a pci card with memory overlap vista wont boot i dont know why.. driveing me nuts but when i take my pci card out it works fine.. only problem no card = no intrnet..

Don't you need the 64 bit version of Windows to make it work?
