    Default Adding Oil

hey there guys, I keep seeing all these waterblocks with clear tops so you can "see" the water flow, but i think it'd be pretty hard to see, since it's all just colored water, theres no difference between this drop and that drop. So i was wondering, since oil and water don't mix, if you could find some colored oil and put it in the loop, it would probably run through fine, and may give a lava-lamp effect to the water inside, but would this decrease the cooling efficiency? I also think it may help the pump a little, having a lubricant running through it. If anyone has ever seen something like this or heard of it, could you leave some input?

It doesn't sound like a good idea to me, for one oil has different properties that make it handy for heating things but not so much for cooling them. That's probably not an issue in the amounts you describe though. Anywhere water pools like the res, radiator, and even some sections of hose where turbulence allows a "dead spot" that water flows around, I would expect oil to stick there. I wouldn't do it but I can't say for sure that it wouldn't work.

yea i think all the oil would either pool together or get churned into an emulsion by the pump.
definitely wouldnt give the effect your after

You could always just do an out of case try, you wouldn't really need much oil.

ya but i would only run the pump and res. it will be a bitch cleaning out from the block or res. also this might hurt the temps. if you could find something that is Hydrophobic (doesn't like water) but has the same viscosity of the water it might work. my dad and meare building a new gate and where using water sealent which has the same viscosity as water and is Hydrophobic. but i think it would eat away the tubing or something else bad.

I don't think emulsion will be a problem, oil stays liquid even at room temp not to mention computer heated water. Keep in mind however, due to the different specific heat of oil, it won't cool as easily as water does when it passes through the rad. It will retain alot of the heat and continue to rise as it circulates.

you could have a secondary radiator cooling the primary radiator .

going on that idea, add a oil seperator and have a seperate oil cooler from a car. get a tranny cooler.

then pump the oil back into the system.
