Front Page Article:Router Basics @ PCMechanic
A very informative little article. Here is a blurb form it. Feel free to discuss the article.
"Wireless routers with built-in switches are everywhere. Although there
are differences between the routers, they have largely the same
features. This guide provides a summary of the common aspects of the routers
currently on the market. Reading your router manual is still necessary
to know exactly what features your router has and where they are
located, but reading this will give you an idea of what to expect before
diving into the manual."
This is a story that is located on the front page of the website.
Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
Me and my boyfriend are ready to buy a wireless router. People with those need to be carefull because the average joe does not protect his wireless network. :) Those types of people would need to read an article like this one.
Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
tell me about it. we're still surfing in the car on small companies net :D
Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
there are about 10 WiFi's around me and about 3 of them dont have passwords or any type of filtering. i was bored one day and was messing with someone's router setting coz they didnt change password... my network is protected by 20+ digit password and MAC filter. so i am pretty safe unless someone very advanced wants to hack me.
Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
I have gotten 3 different wireless routers over the last few years. Newest one is the Linksys WRT54G Firmware 2.0. Basicly the last one that has the ADM6996L Chip. After that they went with a lower powered BCM5325EKQM Chip.
Yet another reason to do research on the wireless routers before you buy.
Also the WRT54G/S routers have Linux based firmware and there are at least 4 versions of the firmware hacks out there, adding things like IPSEC and away to boost the power signial.

A link to the actual article would be most helpful.

Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
I'm annoyed at linksys at the moment, my wrt54g died just out of warrenty, and the replacement wrt54x doesn't work with my 7dba antennas or the somewhat not exactly intended for wireless g Signal booster that was origionally sold for wireless b routers but pulled from the market after people started using them with G routers and exceeding their non licensed power output limits...
but anyways i'm still mad.
Re: Router Basics @ PCMechanic
if you get the same brand again just after it died on you, well, what do you expect? :D

you must have picked up one of he newer models that also has the weaker CPU in it. Note my post above about then switching chips and making the WRT54G/s Weaker.
Here is a list with matching first 4 serial numbers off the box and what chip it uses:
CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.1 ADM6996L Chip
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 ADM6996L Chip
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 ADM6996L Chip
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 BCM5325EKQM Chip
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 BCM5325EKQM Chip
CGN0 = WRT54GS v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0 ADM6996L Chip
CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1 BCM5325EKQM Chip
CGN3 = WRT54GS v1.1 BCM5325EKQM Chip
