how old is the cpu and thermal paste? have you overclocked it at all? if you overclock for a while your cpu gets hotter and cannot run the same overclock as well.
What CPU and cooling solution are you using, and what program are you using to monitor these temperatures? How old is the computer?
Any other hardware change in/around your PC? I was cleaning my living room, and set a picture in a frame behind my tv stand. It tipped over, and was blocking airflow to the back of my HTPC.. temperatures jumped about 15'C on average before I noticed it.
Also, ambient temps are rising as it's spring, maybe something to do with it?
Could be anything really.
blocked airflow
maybe a fan isn't working
maybe the heatsink got loosened up
the thermal paste could be bad
its a good think to check out, but 70C isn't such a horrible number
The maximum Tjunction on my Celeron 420 Conroe-L is 100C and it just barely reaches 70C at full load. This is right out of the box with the CPU integrated heatsink lapped and arctic silver 5 applied. I agree with Doug that 70C really isn't a terrible temperature.
for a cpu, 70C is high for me, i try for 60 and under, but thats just me i guess.
i have that same chip and with it lapped and arctic silver 5 on it i got 30C idle and 40C load. or somewhere along those temps. but that was using the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.
70C isn't too bad if your CPU is at full load. Your best bet would be to replace the thermal paste, reset the heatsink, check all your system fans and make sure that nothing is blocking airflow. Also if you have overclocked that could be a large part of the problem.
And luke122 may have nailed it, Spring is here and Summer is on its way. Your temps are bound to go up.
Thermal paste has a usefull lifecycle of well over 6yrs stated and i've seen 30yr old paste that was still fine. The only possibillity paste wise is that your paste is either too thick or too thin. All you need is a rice grain sized amount on the center of your chip.
70 seems really high to me. Mine comp has been running for 3 days straight and is at a cool 31 at medium high load. Allthough i do have WC but even when i had the stock intel HSF i never toped 60.
you've seen 30 year old paste?
that's impressive in it's own right.
yeah, 70C seems really high to me, my (slightly overclocked) 64 x2 6000+ stays at like, 30-40C all the time, even rendering high poly raytracing, stock cooling.
