Wind Tunnel
This idea just came to me. I would really like to do it, but I already have a mod in progress along with several other projects. I may end up doing it a few months down the road, but if someone else wants to take the idea and run with it feel free.
I was thinking start out with a metal cylinder similar to the one Frenkie is using in his R2-D2 mod (a trashcan). Mount a big fan on the front and back and then mount everything inside of the cylinder very similar to how Frenkie is doing it.
I was able to find 250mm fans but it would be better if I could find ones slightly bigger. I don't know if they make them any bigger though. Anyone?
And I would probably leave the bare metal as is and not paint it.
Suggestions?

Re: Wind Tunnel
first thought: cool
second: DUSTY!
third: car radiator fans

Re: Wind Tunnel
It would probably get pretty dusty, but I would put some type of mesh by the fan to try and keep the dust to a minimum. It would need cleaned often but I don't really mind.
And the radiator fan idea would be really sweet. I think the biggest challenge would be getting the right power to it.

Re: Wind Tunnel
How about a couple of mains powered fans? Desk fan, stand fan etc.
For extra good looks, get one where the fan itself is like an aeroplane propellor.

Re: Wind Tunnel
I could possibly use regular fans, but the nice thing with case fans is they already come with mounts and everything. Makes things easier. Also the motors for regular fans take up a good bit of room and would cause problems as far as getting everything to fit properly and look good.

Re: Wind Tunnel
Head over to your local Home Depot and check out the industrial powered (I'm not going to say sized because that's a bit of a misnomer) fans. A buddy of mine has a couple of the smaller one installed on his drumkit to keep him cool while playing in bars.
This is a brilliant idea, and I would love to see some temp comparisons.
