“I believe everyone should just be fired and let go from that radio station,” Beam said. “It should be the end of The End.”

If they fire the employees, that implies liability, in which case they could be prosecuted for manslaughter, right?

Yes, assuming that they WERE liable. However, the guy they interviewed said something about a physician handing him a waiver?

peopel need to know that drinking water to excess can lead to death. it washes away all the important nutrients (like those that keep you alive) in the body.

Yeah, 3 people die every year doing the London Marathon. Not a lot of people know that.

I'm not sure who's tipping the stupidity scales here, the radio station or the water logged contestants. Water toxicity isn't exactly arcane knowledge and I would assume people would go to extraordinary lengths to win a contest. Fun Fact (yet unsubstantiated): I hear that the famous painter Salvador Dali used to imbibe copious amounts of water to induce hallucinations before planning out his paintings. Disclaimer: Not a good way to design a mod

Yeah, I learned about that in AP Bio. Drinking too much water can cause your cells to burst. Crazy stuff really.

I don't see why it is anyone's fault, basically the radio station said "you don't have to do this" and the people participating said, "oh we want to".

Not to mention:
Ybarra said before the contest, he did not read a liability waiver form handed to him by station personnel before signing it.

This is worded poorly, but it is saying "He was handed a waiver, which he did not read, and then signed it."

That's just tough luck. I'm not saying that what happened wasn't awful, but from a legal perspective the radio station can't get sued.

Just another reason not to play console games. ;)

Good to see you write a tech blog ESX. I am also writing a tech blog to but mine is bit more shady plus the posts are short and sweet as I have limited time these days.

Man, people are stupid. The stations really should have researched the effects of large volumes of water in the body in a short period of time.
And have waivers and medical staff.
The participants are equally as stupid, specifically the ones that don't know their own limits. If you're doing something outside of normal physical routine that is uncommon, go talk to a doctor. Get some medical advice before doing something stupid.
Call me cold, but I think she deserved to die. She didn't listen to her body, she did something exceedingly stupid without medical advice or supervision and she worked in healthcare. I do feel sorry for her kids.

How would one know to research this before hand? I mean seriously... water is about the safest thing you can drink.
So what I'm understanding here is this... if I want to take my grand daughter to a park and put her on a merry-go-round that she has never been on before, I should research heavily before hand to ensure there are no deaths occuring from a two year old getting dizzy?
Folks, I am 52 years old and I have never heard of this, so how would I know to research this?
Just my two cents worth,
Agnat

Canadian Eh?

On youtube there is an audio recording of the radio broadcast. It was very creepy to listen to. I kinda felt like vomiting. I wouldn't think much of it except that I know what happens to that poor woman.

Well, if nothing else, too much water can mess with the pH balance in your stomach making you throw up. And while throwing up isn't lethal, it's sure as hell annoying. Trust me, I know. I've been throwing up off and on the past four days or so.

Hey Kevin, wasn't somebody killed or held at gunpoint nearby over a PS3?

It's a businesses job to do this research for legal reasons. Waivers and medical advice should always be involved when extremes are being tested.

It's the extreme that causes problems. No one has trouble with a glass of water, but 30 might make you sick or dead. Duh. Moderation is the siren call of healthy living.

You also shouldn't drink water during heavy exercise. You shouldn't put anything in your stomach, it can make you vomit. Let your body cool down a bit, then eat or drink.

Yes. Also, someone was shot over a PS3, but this was after the Wii's release.
