Ok. formerly known as Ol' beater, Wiedergeboren will now be the computer I've always wanted. Athlon dual-core, gaming monster.
MSI K9A Mobo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813130057)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103732)
The board takes DDR2 RAM, somehing I'll have to buy whenever I get more money.
Just to refresh minds, here's the computer. (5.1 Megapixel images. Click at your own risk.)
The case. (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1272.jpg)

Heh heh, ...ISA slots (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1275.jpg)
The side/front. (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1276.jpg) BTW, theres the parts I'm donating to the Community PC. :)
Oooh, the glow... (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1277.jpg)
A view inside. (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1278.jpg) This should be my desktop background, or a picture for a sig banner.
Wish I had pics of the computer before this case. But I had this case on the side already and was anxious to use it.
So, there he is. Soon gonna sport the latest stuff I could afford lol

I decided to try to get some cable management inside with what I had for now, just to make it look a little better and cleaner.

BTW, it's always good to have a backup drive, disconnected in case you ever have to restore it. It has a backup file for my entire computer.

Ok, now that the cable management is done, I decided to add a LED strip, red.

Thanks. It can take a 120 mm fan in the front, I just don't have one. And I'm gonna buy that black hose-like sleeve (don't know the exact name for it) that way you won't see all kind of different colors of wires inside, especially for the 20/24 pin connector.

I know, I know, paint it black, lol. I rather buy a black DVD writer instead. But I will do some painting inside the case; those silver panels will be painted black.

Just got 2 pieces of 1*10" plexiglass. No pics yet.
The name Wiedergeboren, I will cut it in the side panel towards the bottom. The red LED strip will illuminate the name at the bottom of the side panel. Should look good. :D I also want to replace the blue fans with red ones, but that comes with time.

Rather than using pre-built round IDE's, have you considered rounding your own ribbons? I thank what you've done so far looks great, I'm just impressed more by do-it-yourself jobs and it leaves you more room for creative license. If you haven't seen it done and are interested, say so because I know there are several worklogs showing the technique. Another bonus is you can make them custom length. Here is a crude one I made for an HDD that was right next to the mobo connector. Mine doesn't look so good, but I'll bet you could make one that was much cooler than stock.

That's a good idea, because I just might have to do that for now.
All the new IDE cables only accept 39 pins, correct? Believe it or not, my mobo and hard drives have 40 pins on 'em, so I can't use my new rounded cables. I will have to round them myself. What's the best way; seperate each individual part of the IDe and then bunch 'em together?
Edit: D'oh! yeah, new rounded IDE cables, a good sign that I got my motherboard and processor today!
I was so sure that I was supposed to get a heatsink and fan with the processor, but I didn't. I got just the processor.

What I would do is start by laying the ribbon flat under a good light, measure the length you need and mark it and with a razor blade or exacto knife make very tiny and careful cuts about 1-2 cm long between each wire in the ribbon. Then use a more dull instrument (just about anything will do provided it's pointed enough to fit between and clearly divide the wires. Then gently peel the ribbon wire by wire until you have a mess looking like medusa. Then you can unsnap those black (in my picture anyway) connectors after marking which end aligns with the red wire, cut the ribbon just a little longer than the desired length and snap those connectore back in. Cut the excess from both ends and separate the ribbon remaining as close to the connectors as you can. Then you use whatever you have designed to roll them with to round'em. By the way, if you use any kind of tubing or the stuff I used make sure you put it on the ribbong before you put both connectore back on :)
This is something that is best given a trial run on a discard cable just to get the groove of it first.

You can also do something like I have done to my case on "Little Blue". I just remembered that I didn't post the new changes on "little blue" so everyone should just neg rep me for that one. Any who, I find that if you planned on having a single drive on a cable , I pop off the slave drive connector and than fold it and than wrap it in your favorite color of electric tape( lots of colors to choose YAAY). I plan to show this on my little blue project, so again I apologize for slacking on that.

Phew, that was rather difficult to read! But out of what I could read, I think you asked what the name of this project means? Wiedergeboren means "reborn" in german. It was the name that I helped think up for him when he was asking for name ideas for his project. I think its a rather good name don't you? Fits quite nicely with this project. :)

Yup. That's the name in a nutshell.
The reason for the name change is because soon, I'll be replacing the motherboard, processor and RAM. After this upgrade, every computer part has been replaced, therefore its not the same computer. So I decided it was time to rename it, and the computer was "reborn" being upgraded from old to new and all. The old mobo even had 3 ISA slots lol!

I found another example, and his looks much better. See how the ribbon is seprarted into strands? What you need to do to get the sheathing on is remove one of the IDE connectors (if you look closely there are small clips on each end) and roll the ribbon up so that it is noarrow enough to slide the sheathing over it. Then replace the connector and voila! Same goes for molex, case fan connectors, etc... All of these can be removed from the wires without damaging anything so that you can feed the wires through something tiny and replace the plug when you're done. There are even handy tool smade for pulling molex plugs available at Radio Shack for cheap.
Check this guys cables out...

I didn't cut my cables up, I just fold mine. Less of a risk of cutting something that I shouldn't. Makes for a more ridged cable though, not as nice as a rounded cable.
jdbnsn
01-05-2007, 01:19 AM
Yeah, you can get away with folding them too. But it makes a difference when you get close to the ends, you can't make it look as tidy with folded cables as you can when they are cut apart.

you can CAREFULLY cut the individual wires of a ribbon cable appart and tape/zip tie them together. just be careful, nice work.

I saw a very short clip of that in action with a PDA. The guy showed a rubber-like mat surface, kinda like those small non-stick mats you see to "keep your phone from sliding around in your car". He put it on the mat and then an orange 'charging' light turned on. It was neat.

I tried yesterday at rounding IDE cables, destroyed 'em. found out too late you could do a small cut, and then pull 'em apart. *bang head*
I got rounded cables from MSI, but they're too stiff. I'll be buying 'em. Maybe ones that are UV reactant.

Yeah they just use induction charging nothing special. There is just a large induction plate under the mat.
This keeps rearing its head and then falls away to the side for a couple of years. They aren't very effective.

In fact, I was wondering if I was supposed to get one. I bought it from Newegg and it came in one of those small plastic folding clear containers. I was wondering if I was supposed to get a heatsink from Newegg or not. I don't remember if it was included or not. It was $122 when I bought it, and it went upto $138 I think. Never called Newegg about it yet; should I?
Edit: I just checked on Newegg and this processor, the 64 X2 3800, priced at $135 includes a fan and heatsink. When it was $122, I don't remember if it said included or not included. The price went up just after I bought it.

Suggestions would help. I just want some good RAM, probably 667 Mhz. I'd like to get 800, but it might be too much for now, unless you know a good deal that I didn't find on Newegg or Tigerdirect. I'm gonna get atleast 1 gig.

I just placed an order for RAM on Newegg last night, 1 GB Kingston 667 Mhz, and I was going back to Newegg this morning to check the product out again, and I get this:

Luckily, I bought it last night.

It went to a 1 gig stick of DDR2 667 Mhz RAM. I bought it before they stopped offering it. Bought it just in time. After adding this part, it's officially finished.

Mark this day on the calendar...
...because Wiedergeboren is officially, well, "Wiedergeboren!" And if you don't know what that means, stick that in your comp and google it! Because it's up and running now!
OC'd it to 2.51 Ghz. Going a little more modest than others. I've heard of this processor going up to 2.7 Ghz, and I don't have enough first-hand experience with OCing, so I'm going easy for now. I have the RAM up from 667, to 833, I believe. But it's far from finished. I gotta setup another computer with 2 IDE channels, just to install the drivers I need. -_-
This'll take a while...

1st post with Wiedergeboren baby! I got the wireless internet installed. Later I'll have the modem and router relocated to my room so I can use CAT 6 wire from the modem to Wiedergeboren, because wireless internet is slower than thru cable.

Server 2003 wasn't gonna work out for my needs, so I installed XP Pro SP2 tonight and got all of my games, music and drivers installed. I just got done playing Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and it's great; the in-game clock is perfectly timed and synchronized with my stopwatch. And that's at the stock 2 Ghz. I'll bump it to 2.5 again later on.

For those of you that haven't translated "Wiedergeboren," it means "reborn." I'm not sure whether or not you added new parts or resurrected an old computer, but thanks for adding to my German vocabulary, heh heh... I'm most likely going to name my PC "Space Heater with Computer Capabilities," or something like that... my old PC was a beast, it was like 700mhz, 128mb RAM, 32mb Video Card, and the same 200gb HDD that I have now... that thing was exactly that, a space heater... I kinda miss it now though, the air vent in my room is closed due to the massive noise... but I wouldn't want that thing back unless you paid me a lotta cash. But yeah, nice job.

Ok, something odd.
I installed XP on Wiedergeboren to replace Server 2003, and when it's all done, the hard drive isn't labeled C: ; It's H:
I thought it was kinda funny, cause it was so random. I don't think I did anything to call it H: I know now that when I put my flash drive in the computer's USB port it comes up as C:
Programs install ok, and it lists the default drive H:, so I guess I'll leave it.

If you have Partition Magic, you should be able to change the drive letter. Congrats on getting this finished.

*sigh*
You know when it's nice, and you have luxuries that you're used to it? Since I got a new desk, I stopped using my 19", 80 lb monitor and used this one from eMachine. This ****ing monitor only looks ok when the brightness is jacked sky high. It just gave me the worst migraine of my whole damn life. On top of that, the eMachine keyboard decided to not work anymore; how convenient. So that leavs me with a keyboard that has sticky keys, and different shaped shift and enter keys, so I can't even type right. Sometimes it doesn't register the ****in key I press. That also leaves me with a monitor that displays 960*600. It looks so jacked up, and now I'm pissed, because these cocksukin' parts, I can't even play halo as good as I truly can and that was the reason for this buildup. And no, that doesn't help this life-suckin' bitch of a migraine I hae now.
I know theres errors in the typing; I don't really give two ****s to go back and correct them; ****ing computers man.....
LOL, I know the feelin'.
Keep with it dude, you'll get there!

Not to go on, but later last night I was hit with a bad sickness. Throwing up, I lost count at 34. It ahppened about a dozen different times, and I've been up since quarter to 2 from last night.
It's odd. If I sit on the ground, hunched forward, I'm fine. When I go to move, somethin's comin' up. Tried water, milk, pepto bismol, chicken broth, toast, crackers and gatorade with no luck of digesting any of it.
I'm better now, I can finally take a piss now, and so far I've been holding down cold Gatorade and yogur, and I can move around without throwing up afterwards.
Sounds crap.
Glad you're feeling better now.

Man, that sucks. Same thing happened to me, but I only threw up 7 times. If it still hurts, here's what worked for me...
I drank half a can of 7-up and slept for 8 hours. Sounds strange, but 7-up usually helps with stomach problems and sleeping lets it do it's job. You'll wake up and your stomach will hurt, but only because you're hungry as ****.

I've been told by the Doctors multiple times to just drink water or 7-up. I can also verify this as true.

Radical, radical change of plans; I went to Sam's Club today w/ my family, and my dad wanted me to check out this one 20" widescreen. Ok, I assume it's a nice, low-price return on clearance or something. He goes right to the aisle with the brand new monitors. He shows me a Viewsonic monitor; 5ms response time, 1680*1050 res, and DVI, which I'vew always wanted a monitor with that. The monitor was $269. Funny, that's what my tax return is. Then, I mention that my ****ty keyboard and mouse need to be replaced. My dad picks up a Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 set, and says "Is this good enough?"
"...hell yes!"
It's a wireless keyboard and mouse for $80. Threw it all on my card, and the monitor will be paid for when the check comes in. That leaves me with $100 for the keyboard/mouse wireless combo, and some sales tax.

Good news, I got my rig back up to 2.71 Ghz; that's in between a 5200+ and an FX-62. I had the voltage too low, but it's fine now. I was gonna play around with my tuning of my RAM when I get another gig of it.
