I've been muling over this idea for a while, and I finally put it to paper, so to speak. The mod is a clear plexi case, probably custom built, with colored plexiglass tetrix blocks. They'd all be tied together, and look 3d. Kinda like
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8440/tetrixcopy5by.jpg.
But in reality, they'd be made of individual plexi panels fastened to the clear plexi frame. Also, each shape would be beveled on the edge, like
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1196/desktest6ok.jpg
The whole thing would be lit from the inside with either UV lights or White cold cathodes.
The problems I'm having with the design thusfar, are
1) The measurements of the case would have to be exactly 18x18x9, as to have all of the blocks be square.
2) Finding that many colors of plexi
3) Putting together an interlocking design that flows really well, and doesn't leave too many, if any, non-tetris shapes.

Lol, I've been working on a similar project, but I'm trying to design bookshelves using Tetris shapes, not a computer mod. It is tough, getting it to fill the entire space in a clean manner without leaving any gaps or holes. I've found that graph paper and a good eraser are very helpful.

As far as finding acryllic, try ACRyan (http://www.acryan.com/index.shtml), MatShop (http://www.matshop.net/content/view/76/394/), or try asking Tybrennis (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/member.php?u=2984), a TBCS forum member who runs a website called PowerPackedPC (http://www.powerpackedpc.com/), I think he sells offcuts of his acryllic.

just play a lot of tetris and get good at stacking them into tetris forms. i have it for gameboy, the original gameboy, i play it on my SP every time im out of the house for more than 20 minutes. if i can put together cshapes on the fly you can easily put together the shapes in a predesigned manner

I came up with a design, I only had to fudge it in three places, too.

Man, it feels like I've been playing tetris for the past two hours. 3d tetris.

Well, I was looking at the Tetris Logo, or at leat one of them, and it was a block. I was thinking maybe I should encorporate it into the design ala~
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/5186/tfrontcopy3bo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
But I'm not sure. This way, I have a lot more non-tetris pieces, but I do get the logo. What do you think?

If this works this would be an extemly sick mod. I really like the logo. Adds that perfosional feel to it. Definatly make a work log or a least some finished photos on here.

I have more time than money right now, so I put this together in Sketchup.

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/9880/tetrix27iu.jpg
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6396/tetrix30fp.jpg
I also tried applying some clear textures, but, they wouldn't all come out transparent. But from what I saw with the clear version (http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3697/tetrix41fp.jpg), I might just go with an opaque case instead. I'll probably have to do a mock up to decide.

That looks GREAT!!! I even like the clear view! Clean look with a great execution of a theme. With a little time and patience I think you can really pull it off nicely.. Great idea.. Good luck with it and looking forward to the worklog.

What program did you use to make that 3d model?

He used SketchUp (http://www.sketchup.com/). It's very easy to use and surprisingly cheap, for how powerful it is. Much easier than most CAD software to learn.

Yeah, I just didn't put them in, as the exact location will probably only be determined once I get it half built.

Also, yeah, Sketchup. It's a neat program, although it leaves me wanting in the texture department.

Anyone looking to try sketchup for longer then the evaluation period? lets say...
...forever...

Nifty lil program

EDIT: NO. Absolutely not. NO posting of software serials or registration information on a public forum like this. Not only is it illegal and could result in you receiving fines and/or jail time, it also puts these forums at a very large liability.

Don't even think about it.

Sorry about this not really being about your idea Atomicman but i would just like to ask how easy is sketchup to learn i have never used CAD before but want to learn. and i love you design i like it with the logo more, will look sweet when its finished.

CanaBalistic

well when you first start the program it'll ask if you'd like to take the 3 step tutorial and it covers all the basics rather well

TheAtomicMan
04-22-2006, 04:32 PM
Yeah. It's easy peasy to learn, although a bit frustrating to get right some times. You can do the free full featured trial, I think it lasts eight hours.

Dude, don't go posting links like that, thats a quick route to getting banned. No self-respecting user on here wants crap like that clogging up these forums. I suggest you edit/delete your post immediately.

Yeah might want to change that post. Go read the -= The Rules Of The Road =- (http://thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14) to keep from getting in trouble around here.

Bad news.
It looks like I'm not going to have enough time to do this before shipping out to basic. So, if anyone wants to give it a shot, It's all yours.
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1356/tetrix5jm.png

I played with it some more, and I got all the textures to be transparent.

Plus, I was thinking those inside right angle corners will be nigh impossible. PM me with your email and I can send you the sketchup file if you want it.
