A long time ago, when I played WoW, I noticed girls would generally avoid identifying themselves as so to avoid the infinite number of 'creepers' that roamed the land. I figure they often choose to do so in other 'geeky environments' for the same reasons. I suspect there are many girls lurking about that are just another one of the guys.

Disclaimer: I'm not even remotely trying to compare anyone here to the creepy SoBs in WoW.

This is true. Years ago I was an op on a very busy irc channel and a lot of women would claim to be male. They claimed it was to avoid the pervs. Personally I think it was just the way they chose to acknowledge the superiority of the male gender. I'll go giggle and hide now lol

Getting back to the whole WoW/Female topic: Everyone here knows that MMORPG stands for Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls, right?

Luthien
12-07-2010, 02:12 PM
Seriously, what's up with that? Why do guys get on there (well anywhere, not just WoW) and play as girls?
Also, I wonder how many women are really on there and they just don't say they're female. I mean, I don't run around going "look at me...I'm female!" but at the same time, if anyone asks me, I'll tell them I am.

Lothair
12-07-2010, 02:26 PM
I've been playing since the game originally released. The male to female ratio I've noticed thus far is about 4 to 1. This is also accounting for having played on multiple servers.

As for why some males play as females while some females play as males, it can be both or either statedgy as well as personal preference for various reasons.

Generosity towards "females" is generally higher. A small detail that can make a small but somewhat handy advantage. Searching for groups, rolling for gear or asking for hand-outs just for a few primary examples.

But playing as a female also has it's downsides. Pervy and creepy players can become quite annoying quite fast. So some females will play as male characters to avoid this.

And then of course you have visual preference. There are some people who would rather stare at their desired sex rather than not. It can really just be as simple as that.

Luthien
12-07-2010, 02:37 PM
I don't play Wow. I do play Guild Wars, and I haven't really noticed any extra generosity. I don't really seek it out though. As for pervs and creeps, I guess every place has them, but I just ignore them. I suppose if someone were offensive enough I could turn them in, but I've not had that happen.
I've not really thought much about the visual preference angle. I could see where guys would rather have a female character to look at then to play a guy yet again. I'd still rather play a female character even though I like guys. It may just be a personal preference or maybe it's because developers tend to work more on making "hot" female characters and the male characters tend to be just average.

Hit the nail on the head for me. If there are no other differences between characters (play style, etc.) I will choose the female character because they're nicer to look at. Also female protagonists are sorely lacking in games and there's a big trend in games (I'm talking you XBox fanboys) to have male protagonists that have huge muscles and grunt and swear a lot.

Huge muscles...ridiculously huge muscles, as in, they look like over-steroided thugs. Grunting and swearing a lot? Yawn...There should be hot male characters like there are hot female characters...It's very one-sided. There are less female protagonists in games, but when they exist, they tend to look better than their male counterparts.

I'll let you in on a little secret... the majority of game developers are guys...they generally don't like making 3D models of hot men... :whistler:

Are you saying poodles are NOT interesting?? I'd hate to inform PETA or the PCA (http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/)of your anti-poodle sentiment. Poodles are animals too, and they have rights. It seems it isn't easy being a poodle, green, or cheesy. Perhaps it wasn't as random as you thought...;)
