I am about to go back to XP. It is ludicrous that the wizards at Microsoft decided that I shouldn't be able to arrange my icons the way I want them anywhere outside the desktop. I used to be able to open a folder and arrange all the icons in that folder wherever I wanted, in whatever order I wanted, regardless of name, date of creation, file size, post count, top speed, or number of dependents. Win7 just decides for me. Granted there are a lot of ways to sort it, but the list doesn't include "However You Want".

I shouldn't have to rename my files to get the icons in the order I want them in. Does anyone know of any software that will duplicate file management XP-style?

I googled around a bit and found this site. Take a look at the different file managers they have listed (http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-file-manager.htm).

Appreciate the effort, but none of those will do it either. They all seem to be table-oriented as opposed to icon-oriented. The functionality is exactly the same as Win7: the program sorts the icons for you.

Thanks for looking though, +rep for the help.

I found this reg fix (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disable-full-row-select-explorer-windows-7/). I'll try it myself after lunch but if you're here now you might want to give it a try.

EDIT: Great success!
Here's what I did:
1: Download this (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/nofullrowselect.zip) and run "disable fullrowselect"

2: Download this (http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/h1-10/w7-fullrowsel.zip) and run "disablefullrowselect".

3: Restart explorer.exe

(Someone at MS should have his head examined for removing that.)
