I can see a use for this already. Try a simple mini-itx system that you want to stuff in a tiny enclosure.

It's interesting. I wonder why it has all the pins though. I would think it should only have the pins that supply the power to it so the motherboard doesn't see the slot as being occupied.

"For new designs, system architects will appreciate that the SATA data signals can be routed directly to the socket thus eliminating the need for any cables. Furthermore, a socket can be easily and cost-effectively designed to be used for either DDR3 DRAM modules or SATADIMM operation."

Ah, so these are specially designed sockets. I thought this was something you could just drop in any empty DIMM slot.

You can, the artictle stated what Dr. Walrus quoted

Meaning that future slots could use them either way, or be used either way.

If you throw them in any slot now, you need a cable and your mobo is going to see that slot as occupied thus limiting the speed of the actual DIMMs if they were running over ~1600 Mhz. Special slots built in the future will allow the SATA data to route with the RAM.

The ssd's are already tiny. Do you really need to mount it on your mobo? Especially for enterprise computers (which it seem they mainly market them for) where space isn't such a big deal as in HTPC's, etc.

They'd fit neatly into a blade server.
