So, LG is showcasing 32" OLED TVs (http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/lgs-31-inch-oled-spin-slices-its-way-into-our-cold-lcd-hearts/), Samsung is planning on starting to ship 40" OLED TVs late this year, and Sony is working on OLED tech as well. :D I see a bright future ahead. My only question is...when can I buy one?!?!?!

I'm seriously incredibly excited that some big name manufacturers are putting money into OLED tech..for a while there it looked like it was going to turn into merely a nice idea that never got the backing it needed to be great, but now I think we may actually see that greatness very soon! :D True blacks, amazingly high contrast, true 180/180 viewing angles, drastically reduced power consumption, oh, and they're stupid thin! :D

Hey, by "stupid thin" did you mean "stupid 2.9mm thin"?

Anyone got an estimated price on these beauties?

Hahaha, yup. :D And more; I know at least Samsung is working on perfecting flexible OLED displays...imagine instead of rolling out a projection screen and projecting stuff onto it that instead you could unroll the display itself! Or large rollout screens on haldheld devices. Also, not just for flexible displays, but for OLED in general, once the tech gets solidified and standardized and manufacturing facilities get rolled out, the cost of producing an OLED display is worlds different than the cost of producing a LCD display.

EDIT:
re Diamon: Not yet, but I expect the first generation will be quite expensive and we won't start seeing the price benefit for a few years.

I like OLED for how thin it is, but I care more about the really thin bezels. My big hope is that someone makes some 1920x1200 OLED computer monitors with ultra thin bezels. That or a higher resolution in 16:10 aspect ratio. I want to do a really good looking Eyefinity setup and I'm even willing to spend a little money to make it happen.

Well, with OLED there's not really any reason to have a bezel, because everything is on piece; you don't have to have the hardware on the edges holding everything together. Oh, and OLED will also be great for Eyefinity setup-ups because of the viewing angles. Since the light originates from the plane of the display, the picture should look the same from any angle. If you watch the video in the Engadget article I linked in the OP, you can see the horizontal viewing angle at least.

WOW... That is amazing. Just imagine the clarity and the reality of the pictures, the best thing is that TV comes in 3D. I just can’t imagine how awesome it is.

Don't forget the OLED screens are (or at least soon will be) available on flexible substrates. These displays can be bent/reshaped as needed (within limits) or used in new "layered display" applications or even worn as clothing (so people claim).

The first OLEDs suffered a huge disadvantage in terms of diminished brightness over time (product longevity) when compared against LCDs, they even continue to degrade (slowly) while unpowered. Have they improved? Have they even surpassed LCDs in this respect?

They should be able to perfect something like that. Normal LEDs have an estimated time before failure of about 80 years so they should at least be able to make these screens last 10 years.

OLEDs used to be rated <20K hours ... pretty dismal compared against an equivalent LCD rated ~250K hours that costs a third as much.

Looking online I see that current OLEDs carry ~75K-125K hours, not bad, and price differences have dropped dramatically. Exceptions are the very tiniest (8x8 pixel) and largest (40") panels, which still have poor lifespans.

LCD bezels are the only thing keeping me from an eyefinity setup. If I could get monitors with extremely tiny bezels or with no bezel at all, I too would make a serious investment in 4 hi-res monitors.

Mod 'em lol - build your own enclosure for the 4 panels.... Tis what we do here....

The bezels are structural though. And I can't just saw off the extra components underneath...
