Its called TextFree (Lite). There is a paid version, but for some reason the App Store link isn't working so I wasn't able to get it and test it out.

Basically, what it does is use a WiFi connection to send and receive cellular text messages! FOR FREE! Although the free version only gives you something like 10 or 15 messages per day. The only downsides that I've encountered so far is that it has no message alert system other than you can have it send an email to you when you receive a message and that there isn't a contacts section, so you have to know your phone numbers by heart.

Now if I could just figure out how to get VOIP on my Touch... then I can just about get rid of my cell phone! :p (although I wouldn't since it only works if you have a WiFi connection, and it probably wouldn't work that well, but the texting works pretty good so far.)'

I'm with Verizon by the way. Anyone else want to download it and see if it works? I'm curious to know if its 100 percent working yet or not. I texted my friend and she was able to text me back as well and she has AT&T.

Ya, you can give your ipod touch a phone number as well. You just need a mic and you have a wifi cell phone. If you have a phone that's capable of tethering you can use the ipod as a phone anywhere.

I have been using this app for a few weeks. I love the fact that its anonymous. I was sending text to people at a basketball game and watching them look around for who was sending the anonymous text.
