As far as I know, modchips themselves aren't illegal.

It's what their uses (aka playing backed up games) that are illegal

True. Selling them I dont think is illegal yet. I might grab another one.

Umm.. The dude that sold the modchips was convicted for selling mod chips. That to me would indicate they are illegal. Now that said... It was in the UK where mod chips are definately deemed illegal.

Through lawsuits during 2002 in many countries, including against Lik Sang in Hong Kong and Neo Technologies and Channel Tech, it was held that modchips were illegal devices.

Mod chips are illegal. So i'm locking this thread. and thats good enough for me!! :D

In the US its a not really that cut and dry... There were a bunch of arrests made on August 1st of this year due to selling mod chips. The main point of these arrests were that the particular mod chips used hacked Microsoft code. Which is what made them illegal.

May I point out that while in the UK modchips are deemed illegal, it's not in Australia, Sweden, Spain and US.

I say US, because of the fact of if the modchip doesn't have a BIOS with code which infringes on the DMCA, it's legal (from my understanding).
